The Ballad Of Britain

From spring to autumn 2009 Will Hodgkinson travelled through Britain with a portable recording device called a Zoom. The goal was to capture the spirit of the land and its people through field recordings, to explore British folklore and find out if the old songs are still alive. Along the way he danced with gypsies in a wood in Scotland, was attacked by a large woman with a chair in England, and discovered that what we need in life is right there in front of us. The Ballad Of Britain (Portico) tells the story of the journey. A CD of the best field recordings, featuring everyone from Scottish travellers to semi-famous musicians, is available on the Heron label.

“British folk songs have survived through the ages, crossing the water and soaking into blues, country and rock’n’roll and continuing to have relevance for new generations. Looking For A New England is a timely celebration of the mystery and ancient appeal of the songs and stories that have endured through the centuries.”
