Jackie Oates’ decision in 2007 to leave the Mercury-nominated Rachel Unthank & The Winterset to pursue a solo career looked like a brave decision at the time but has proved to be inspired. Two solo albums followed bringing a swathe of glowing national reviews in their wake. Her second album – ‘The Violet Hour’ – went on to be one of Mojo’s top ten folk albums of the year in 2008 and led to Jackie winning two BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2009 including the BBC Folk Award for best newcomer.
Newly signed to One Little Indian Records, in September 2009 Jackie released ‘Hyperboreans’, the highly anticipated follow-up album to ‘The Violet Hour’. Produced by her brother Jim Moray and featuring a title track written for her by Alasdair Roberts, it sizzled with a new confidence and maturity. Rave reviews, mainstream radio play and award nominations, including a remarkable three nominations in the 2010 BBC Folk Awards, followed to underline the arrival of Jackie Oates as one of the leading young artists in Britain today.
